District English Language Learner

Mrs. Hughes’ nominations included the following student comment:

“Mrs. Hughes strives to do her best for her students whether they are a student in the ESL Program or a regular student.  She never complains when asked to do something and always completes the tasks at hand to her greatest ability.  She first made an impact on me when I was in the 4th Grade and has continued to do so throughout my Middle School and High School years by encouraging me to do my best and always reach for the stars.  I know I could go to her for virtually anything and she would find the time to help me!  She has made an impact on so many students and staff members throughout her years in Simpson County School District.  She is definitely an Excellent Educator!!”

Mrs. Hughes has been involved with public education for the past 34 years, 33 of those years being in Simpson County.  She is currently the District Coordinator and teacher for the English Language Learners Program across all the grade levels.  Previously, Mrs. Hughes was a Special Education Teacher (LBD), a regular Education Classroom Teacher (5th Grade), and Guidance Counselor for both Franklin Elementary and Lincoln Elementary, at different times.

Mrs. Hughes was born and grew up in Holy Cross, Kentucky, which is near Bardstown, Kentucky.  She attended Western Kentucky University where she received her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Rank I.  Her Master’s and Rank I are in Guidance Counseling.  She is also a licensed Professional Clinical Counselor.

In discussing the favorite part of her current duty in the school system, she mentions the true appreciation of learning and respect for education the English Language Learners display towards education and the educator.  She states: “I love watching the students ‘light-up’ once they master a concept and gain confidence in themselves for learning a new skill.”

Mrs. Hughes has been married to David Hughes, retired Special Education Director of Simpson County Schools, for the past 30 years.  They have one daughter, who is a cosmetologist, and one granddaughter.  In her free time, Mrs. Hughes enjoys sewing and making clothes for her granddaughter, traveling to South Carolina with David, volunteering at the Simpson County Boys and Girls Club, and participating in the local Daughters’ of the American Revolution Chapter.  She also loves to read AR books!!  She has just finished her term as President of the Board of Directors for Simpson County Boys and Girls Club.

Thank you, Debbie Hughes, for your superb dedication to the Students of Simpson County the past 33 years.  Simpson County Schools are stronger today because of teachers and administrators like you!
